Surgical Treatment of Diaphragmatic Eventration

Abstract
Diaphragmatic eventration is an uncommon condition and generally accept as an abnormally high position of some part of the diaphragm or the whole diaphragm, which is divided by etiology into two groups : congenital (nonparalytic) and acquired (paralytic).
During the period from January 1970 to May, 1989, we had experienced 14 cases of diaphramatic eventration(congenital ; 13 cases, acquired ; 1 case). The ratio of, male to female was 8 : 6 in male predominance. Posteroanterior and. lateral chest roentgenograms gave conclusive evidence in a majority of cases, but in 5 cases, fluoroscopy of barium studies were needed to confirm the diaphragmatic eventrations. A majority of the eventrations (12 cases) were located on the left side. In all cases we performed plication of diaphragm by thoracic approach with good results except one death..
